The Indian developer GameEon Studios is now at work on their next open world action adventure game, titled Mumbai Gullies. In 2020, during the India Game Developers Conference, the game was revealed to the public for the first time (IGDC). There are plans to distribute it on Steam and Epic Games Store for Windows PC.
The game is played from a third-person perspective and takes inspiration from open-world games like the Grand Theft Auto series. The user is free to explore the game world at their own pace using a fleet of vehicles at their disposal, including trains, cars, and auto-rickshaws.
The Indian state of Maharashtra and the city of Mumbai serve as the backdrop for the game, and it has been stated that famous locations like the Bombay Stock Exchange, Gateway of India, and the Dharavi slums appear there.
The protagonist of the single-player game is an Indian pickpocket named Vangya, who, together with his friend Johnny, has joined forces with the criminal organization headed by Potya bhai so that they can “make a name for ourselves” in the city. The player can choose from a wide range of missions and side activities, some of which are integral to the story and others of which can be completed separately.
The developer thinks that development began in 2015, that the bulk of the game was built following the announcement at IGDC in 2020, and that the first preview video was released in June of 2021. In September of 2021, the game’s developers received funding from a group of Mumbai-based Angel Investors. The 2021 IGDC Showcase featured character models and early gameplay footage from upcoming games. Many statements regarding the Android port of Mumbai Gullies are not supported by the available evidence. But, Thetechbook makes it plain that only PCs and consoles will be supported during development. At the same time, Mumbai Gullies producer and GameEon Studios CEO Nikhil Malankar stated that the game would be released in two parts, with the first portion, Mumbai Gullies: Prologue, coming out in 2023 and the second part, Mumbai Gullies: Final Chapter, coming out in 2025.
Crowd fundraising helped GameEon raise 1,77,000/- for Mumbai Gullies. The Mumbai Angels Network contributed $320,000 to GameEon Studios.
The game’s producer, Nikhil Malankar, revealed the split during the IGDC Showcase 2021, with the first half, Mumbai Gullies: Prologue, coming out in 2023 and the second, Mumbai Gullies: Final Chapter, coming out in 2025.
